So anybody else on here a fan? Any memories from the time or fave songs? Are they even known outside of the UK? If you haven't heard them before, here's a couple of their finest as performed on Top of the Pops. Sham 69 was formed in the working-class community of Hersham (in Surrey) in 1975 by. They weren't a truly great punk band like the Clash or the Sex Pistols but they they livened up the charts and gave voice to a whole generation of disaffected youth, ultimately leading for better or worse to bands like the Cockney Rejects and the Oi movement.

The adrenaline running through some of those records is incredible - If the Kids are United must be one of the most raucous tracks ever to crack the top ten. These days I rarely listen to them but when I do, it always puts a big grin on my face. Despite Jimmy's commendable anti-racist stance their gigs attracted the National Front and there was often violence as a result so the band broke up. Tracks like Tell us the Truth, Hey Little Rich Boy and Sunday Morning Nightmare (with it's immortal line "Don't tell me mum I've got me bird in the club") had their charms as well. It wasn't just the singles though, there were a few gems on the albums too. Who cared what the critics thought? They were OUR band, a Slade for the punk generation. It was this down to earth approach and their sense of humour that made them so appealing to us 12/13 year olds. His lyrics reflected day to day life for most working class people - Hurry up Harry's chorus of "We're going down the pub" always raised a smile. Charismatic frontman Jimmy Pursey made an impression right from the start and portrayed himself as a spokesman for the kids. They soon got into the charts and ended up making several memorable appearances on Top of the Pops. They released a string of enjoyable singles including the thrilling Borstal Breakout as well as Angels with Dirty Faces, If the Kids are United, Hurry up Harry, Questions and Answers, Hersham Boys etc. Most of their songs combined nifty guitar riffs with football terrace chant choruses that attracted a big live following. Wynk also makes it easy to create your own playlists that you can listen to anytime on Wynk Music. After my threads on the Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers, next up is another one of my teenage favourites who are rarely (if ever) discussed on this forum, Sham 69.ĭefiantly working class and without art school backgrounds, Sham were dismissed by music critics but hugely popular with "the kids".
